This early design elevator was later covered with corrugated sheet metal to protect it against fire. Model is cut from styrene. Dimensions: 5.75 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, 7.75 inches high.

A crucial element of any prairie farming community was the grain elevator. Grain was the commodity group that paid the GN’s bills for decades and grain was hauled in boxcars. Grain originated from Montana east of the Rocky Mountains eastward along the entire railway and was shipped to Minneapolis for milling, to Duluth/Superior for lake carriage to Buffalo NY for milling, or to Chicago for delivery on futures contracts and sale beyond. Grain from central Montana and eastern Washington moved west to export elevators on the Lower Columbia River and Puget Sound. Spot 40-foot boxcars, and their 33 and 36-foot predecessors, at the elevator for loading.
